Welcome! (Week 1)
Hello, Everyone!!! My name is Jasmyne Curtis. I am 25 years old, and I currently reside in Atlanta, GA. How did I end up at the University of West Alabama? I am originally from a small town, Grove Hill, about 80 miles north of Mobile, Alabama. I have a relative who obtained both her Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Elementary Education from UWA. I also attended a NCTM conference in New Orleans a few years ago where I met an online education representative from UWA who informed me about the online program. She also gave me a cute teddy bear! With all of the information and good reviews I received from these two sources, I decided that this university would be perfect for my graduate school journey. I obtained a Bachelor's in Elementary Education at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. I am currently employed with the Atlanta Speech School (specializing in mild to moderate learning disabilities and hearing impairments) where I serve as the assistant teacher for the Wardlaw division of the school. For a lead teacher position at this school, one must obtain a Master's degree in Reading, Elementary, or Special Education. As a result, I am enrolled at UWA to obtain a Master's in Special Education. I've always known that I wanted to be an educator. For me, this is a dream come true!

I found UWA online through a teacher friend. The online option is an excellent choice for me because I can work, attend classes and keep my regular schedule with my family.
ReplyDeleteYour teaching experience sounds wonderful. Good luck to you as you complete your masters. I earned my masters and initial certification at the same time. I'm back in school now to re-certify to teach after being a stay at home mom and substitute teacher. I let my certificate lapse because I had a crazy notion that I might not want to go back to teaching when I went back to work full-time. Once teaching is in your blood, there is nothing better . . . "a dream come true" is so accurate.
Good luck to you!! I know so many parents that say they just don't have the time or patience to return to school. My mom even waited until I graduated college before she felt like she could return. It's amazing that there are parents like my mom and yourself that will put important things, such as their career, on hold to make sure their, even more important, children are given the love and support they need. Congratulations on having your dream come true again.
ReplyDeleteJasmyne sound like you know what you want and what you have to do to get it. Stay focused and motived and you can do anything you set out to accomplish. I look forward to reading your blog. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteIt seem like you have your mind where you want to be and where you want to go. I learned about online class through one of friend who is on his way to be Principal. Whenever I get back into education my goal is to be a great Principal somewhere. Good luck and I hope everything works out.
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm late responding but I read your post back in January. Sound like we may be related! I'm from Mobile, but I do have some family in Clarke County (Whatley, Thomasville, Sunny South-Wilcox County, I know but its close to Clarke County). My parents got married in Grove Hill. But anyway, I hope you are successful in your studies. I knew many people who received their degree from UWA which lead me to enroll here. I love how convenient it is to take classes without changing my work schedule. I struggled with that during undergrad. I am interested in the school where you currently work at. You can email me at clark.shylah@live.com. Good luck with your studies! I've enjoyed your blogs.
